Algeria Reaffirms Commitment to the Complete Elimination of All Weapons of Mass Destruction

NEW YORK – Algeria reaffirmed on Wednesday its commitment to the complete elimination of all weapons of mass destruction—nuclear, chemical, and biological—through its Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Toufik Laïd Koudri.

In an address during a meeting of the 1540 Committee, which is tasked with implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1540 on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Koudri emphasized that Algeria remains fully dedicated to the total eradication of these weapons. He underlined that Resolution 1540 “is not an end in itself, but part of the broader architecture of non-proliferation, aiming to rid the world of this threat.”

“Algeria remains willing to work constructively with all partners to fully implement Resolution 1540,” Koudri stated, stressing the need for the resolution to continue serving as a barrier against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, which pose a grave threat to international peace and security.

In this context, Algeria highlighted several key points. These include the need to “preserve the delicate balance between the peaceful and lawful uses of technology and related materials for the purposes of development and socio-economic progress” and the imperative to “ensure that implementation efforts do not create unnecessary burdens, especially for developing countries that still require targeted technical assistance and capacity-building,” Koudri explained.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the 1540 Committee and regional organizations, as well as enhancing partnerships with relevant mechanisms, including the Pelindaba Treaty and the OAU Convention on the Prevention and Combating of Terrorism.

Moreover, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Algeria underscored that in the face of proliferating transnational criminal networks and the persistent terrorist threat, “we must strengthen our collective response, intensify international cooperation, and continue to support the mandate of the Committee responsible for implementing Resolution 1540.”
