
ALGIERS – The Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said Tuesday that a new system of local authority management would be established from 2025, embodying true democracy and extending the prerogatives of elected representatives.
Chairing the opening of the proceedings of the Government-Walis meeting, being held under the theme “Local Authorities: Driving Force of National Development,” the Algerian president announced “the establishment, from 2025, of a new system of local authorities’ management embodying the true democracy and extending the prerogatives of elected officials.”
Local authorities, he underlined, were “the bedrock of the state,” the municipality and provincial codes must be revised so that these texts can give concrete expression to the will of local residents.
Tebboune said the “time has come for the revision of the municipality and provincial codes to build democratic institutions,” providing “more prerogatives to the local officials.”
In terms of prerogatives, the resources made available and classification of municipalities, the president of the Republic said “some infrastructures will be managed by the State instead of municipalities to avoid burdening them financially.”
