Algeria: Minister Arkab receives APPO Secretary General

ALGIERS – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, received on Monday the Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), Omar Farouk Ibrahim, who is visiting Algeria to participate in the second meeting of the Forum of Research and Innovation Centers of APPO member states, the Algerian ministry said in a statement.

The meeting, held in the presence of senior officials from both parties, served as an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Algeria and APPO, particularly in the areas of oil and gas industry, training, and research and development. Discussions also focused on recent developments in global energy markets and the prospects for enhanced regional collaboration among African oil and gas-producing countries, in the context of ongoing global energy transformations and energy transition, the statement said.

The two sides also addressed the administrative and organizational aspects of the organization, along with the fruitful cooperation among African oil-producing countries both within and outside the OPEC framework, as well as within the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. They emphasized the importance of joint coordination and the assessment of the international oil market and its future prospects.

In this context, the Minister of State reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to intensify its efforts to support African countries, particularly through the organization, by sharing its extensive expertise in exploration, production, engineering, equipment manufacturing, and training. He highlighted the key role played by national institutions, especially the Algerian Petroleum Institute (IAP), in training and preparing African professionals to tackle the technical and professional challenges of the energy sector, the source added.

The discussions also touched on the latest developments regarding the launch of the new African Energy Bank, established by APPO, which is expected to be a game-changer in financing energy projects across the continent. The bank aims to mobilize the necessary investments to support energy infrastructure projects and stimulate economic growth in member states.

For his part, Omar Farouk Ibrahim expressed his deep gratitude to Algeria for its steadfast commitment to supporting the objectives of the organization. He praised Algeria’s efforts in promoting scientific research, innovation, and the development of human resources in the energy sector. He further emphasized that Algeria’s hosting of the Forum of Research and Innovation Centers is a clear testament to its significant contribution to the development of the energy sector at the continental level.

According to the statement, since the establishment of APPO in 1987, Algeria has continued to play a key role within the organization, which currently includes 15 member states and 3 observer countries. Through this continental framework, Algeria seeks to strengthen African cooperation, unify visions, and promote the exchange of expertise across various segments of the oil and gas industry—both upstream and downstream. These efforts aim to reinforce the continent’s position as a strategic energy source and contribute to sustainable development for its peoples.
