Algeria-Mauritania: 20th Grand Joint Cooperation Commission Concludes in Algiers

The 20th session of the Algerian-Mauritanian Grand Joint Commission for Cooperation concluded this Tuesday afternoon in Algiers, under the co-chairmanship of Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Mauritanian counterpart, Mokhtar Ould Diay.

In a statement to the press, Ghrieb noted that the session “took place in a fraternal atmosphere marked by complete harmony, reflecting a shared will to elevate bilateral cooperation to the highest levels of partnership and a firm ambition to advance toward a stage of integrated and strategic complementarity.” He expressed his satisfaction with the results achieved, which he said will serve as “new building blocks on the path to deepening the bonds of solidarity, brotherhood, and cooperation that unite the two brotherly peoples, and toward expanding and diversifying the areas of cooperation and partnership between the two countries.”

Pertaining to this, he noted that the session was held in implementation of the instructions and directives from the leaders of both countries, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his Mauritanian counterpart, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The session aimed to “conduct a comprehensive, objective, and in-depth assessment of all aspects of bilateral cooperation and monitor the implementation of decisions and recommendations issued since the previous session.” Ghrieb highlighted the “significant achievements made in deepening economic relations and expanding commercial and financial exchanges, implemented through the launch of several strategic and vital projects.”

Regarding security cooperation, he pointed out that Algeria and Mauritania are “coordinating efforts to combat various security threats in the border regions, including organized crime, terrorism, illegal migration, and drug trafficking.” This cooperation was reflected in the second session of the Joint Security Committee held last year, which enabled “a precise assessment of the security situation at the regional and border levels, while charting the path for enhanced cooperation in this vital area.”

On the cultural front, PM Ghrieb revealed that “agreement was reached to establish an Algerian cultural center in Mauritania, tasked with promoting Hassaniya culture and enhancing mutual participation in book fairs organized in both countries.” He added that Algeria “is working to support brotherly Mauritania in establishing two cultural centers in the Adrar and Tagant regions.”

Furthermore, the Prime Minister noted that the session allowed for a review of regional and international issues of common interest, where “there was a convergence of views, backed by a firm and genuine shared commitment to coordinate the positions of the two countries.” Meanwhile, the Mauritanian PM expressed gratitude to Algeria for its “generous funding to construct the road linking the two countries,” which is expected to play “a decisive role in strengthening exchange and cooperation, not only between the two countries but with all countries in the region and across the continent.” He also commended “Algeria’s continuous responsiveness in ensuring Mauritania’s supply of energy resources.”
