ALGIERS – The Algerian Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and City, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, affirmed on Tuesday, in Algiers, that Algeria has made African cooperation one of the constants of its foreign and development policy, and a strategic choice carried by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
In his speech during the 44th General Assembly (GA) of the Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB), Belaribi undersocred that “Algeria is committed to translating this vision into major strategic projects that advance African integration,” highlighting the African Unity Road connecting six countries, the trans-Saharan fiber optic network also linking six countries, and the Tindouf-Zouerate road project in Mauritania.
Algeria has allocated a financial envelope to development projects in African countries, notably integration projects or those able to truly contribute to the sustainable development of the continent, thus reaffirming its orientation based on strengthening African cooperation, recalled the minister.
He also emphasized the importance of Algeria’s organization of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), scheduled for next September, qualifying the event as “an important meeting mirroring the country’s commitment to strengthen commercial exchanges as part of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”
Reviewing Algeria’s achievements in this field, the sector’s first official estimated that the distribution of nearly 1.7 million housing units, all formulas combined, during the period from 2020 to 2024, constitutes “a first in terms of scale and impact, especially as these units were entirely financed by public Treasury resources, which reflects the importance of the investments mobilized,” expressing his pride in seeing these achievements implemented by Algerian hands.
Algeria “has made access to housing an absolute priority, being conscious that making available a decent and dignified living environment constitutes the cornerstone of social stability, the consolidation of human dignity and the strengthening of the feeling of belonging among citizens,” according to the minister.
This strategic choice was implemented by the President of the Republic when he inscribed housing among his major commitments toward the people, commitments which include the realization, by the State, of two (2) million new housing units across the national territory during the period 2025-2029, he added.
Regarding the production of construction materials, Belaribi affirmed that Algeria had succeeded, in record time, in passing from the status of importing country to that of producer and exporter of these materials, thanks to a clear strategic vision and strong will, having allowed to bring the sector’s contribution to nearly 12.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
