Algeria Launches Official Campaign for Deputy Chair of African Union Commission

Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, officially launched the campaign for Algeria’s candidate for the position of Deputy Chair of the African Union Commission, Ambassador Salima Malika Haddadi. The event took place in Addis Ababa during Attaf’s official visit to Ethiopia.
The ceremony, organized by the Algerian Embassy in Addis Ababa, was attended by numerous representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to the African Union and senior officials from the continental organization. In his address, Ahmed Attaf emphasized that Ambassador Haddadi’s candidacy for the February 2024 elections reflects President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to strengthening Algeria’s contribution to advancing African cooperation for peace, stability, and development.
Attaf highlighted Algeria’s determination to enhance the governance and efficiency of the African Union in addressing the continent’s challenges and capitalizing on its achievements. He pointed to milestones such as the AU’s permanent membership in the G20, the adoption of the “African ownership” principle in peacekeeping operations, growing global acknowledgment of Africa’s demands for fair representation in the UN Security Council, and the need for equitable participation in international financial institutions.
Ambassador Salima Malika Haddadi used the occasion to outline the key pillars of her campaign and present her ambitious vision for improving the financial and administrative management of the African Union Commission. Drawing on her extensive diplomatic experience and deep knowledge of African affairs, Haddadi pledged to implement best practices in management to bolster the AU’s operational effectiveness.
This campaign reaffirms Algeria’s steadfast commitment to its leadership role in Africa, showcasing its dedication to fostering unity, addressing the continent’s priorities, and advancing its interests on the global stage.
