Algeria Joins Global Parliamentary Observatory on Climate and Just Transition

ALGIERS- The Algerian Parliament’s Lower House announced, in a press release, its membership as a founding member, in the Parliamentary Observatory on Climate Change and Just Transition, launched by the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino).

In this regard, Deputy Fateh Boutbig signed, on behalf of the Lower House’s speaker, and the president of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU), Brahim Boughali, the declaration of creation of this Observatory, last Thursday, at the headquarters of “Parlatino” in Panama, said the source.

This Observatory which brings together parliaments from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, aims to express “the commitment to raise the level of international parliamentary cooperation to face the climate crisis and to orient towards an energy transition based on social justice, through the promulgation of legislation on green activities and technologies, just climate financing, by guaranteeing the rights of vulnerable categories.”

In an address delivered on behalf of the speaker of the People’s National Assembly, Boutbig expressed “Algeria’s immutable positions consecrating the spirit of solidarity between Southern countries and its firm commitment to the principles of national sovereignty, social justice and the right of peoples to self-determination.”

The issue of climate change constitutes “a national and international priority” for Algeria, he affirmed, emphasizing in this regard “the efforts deployed under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, notably through the National Climate Plan (NCP), the Green Dam Initiative and the creation of the Parliamentary Network for Environment and Climate.”

He also emphasized the necessity of “achieving climate justice and reaching equitable treatment for the African continent, which is the least responsible for pollution in the world but which pays the highest price for its effects and repercussions,” adding that “wars and conflicts, like the current situation prevailing in Gaza, destroy not only lives, but also the environment and hinder sustainable development efforts.”

At the end of his address, Boutbig expressed the “pride of the People’s National Assembly and the AIPU to be founding members of the Parliamentary Alliance for Climate and Environmental Justice,” considering this initiative as “a concrete step towards strengthening South-South cooperation in order to meet environmental challenges,” added the source.
