Algeria Introduced Key Amendments Safeguarding Palestinian Rights in UNSC Gaza Peace Resolution

The Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, commended Algeria’s position, which introduced key amendments safeguarding Palestinian rights in the draft United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution on the Gaza peace plan, noting that Algeria chose to align with the mediators’ demands, who stressed that a Security Council resolution is necessary given the possibilities of the ceasefire agreement collapsing.

During the Security Council’s monthly meeting on “The Situation in the Middle East, Including the Palestinian Question,” Riyad Mansour, speaking about the draft UN Security Council resolution on “the Gaza peace plan,” said that “Algeria, on behalf of Palestine and the Arab Group, introduced several substantial amendments safeguarding Palestinian rights, alongside Somalia and with Pakistan’s backing.”

He noted that “these amendments garnered broad support from Security Council members.” Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the UN said that while some amendments made it into the text, others did not. He pointed out that “Algeria kept pushing until the very end to get amendments into the text, including acting in its national capacity, and this was after the joint statement by the eight Arab and Islamic states with the United States supporting the resolution.”
