Algeria inaugurates stand at the 68th IAEA General Conference

VIENNA – The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations (Vienna), Larbi Latroche, presided over the Algerian stand’s inauguration at the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which will last until Friday.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Shaukat Abdulrazak, the representative of the IAEA Director General, Rachedi Menadi, President of the National Authority for Nuclear Safety and Security, Abdelhamid Mellah, Commissioner for Atomic Energy, as well as heads of delegations participating in the conference and representatives of diplomatic missions in Vienna.

Under the theme “Nuclear Science and Technology for Sustainable Development Goals in Algeria: Achievements and Successes,” the stand will highlight Algeria’s key achievements in the peaceful use of nuclear techniques over the course of a week. This includes advancements in health, agriculture, food security, water resources, and environmental protection.

In his remarks, Mr. Latroche shed light on Algeria’s progress made in cancer treatment, particularly in radiotherapy and nuclear medicine.

He also emphasised Algeria’s commitment to cooperating with the IAEA, especially regarding the training services offered by the Pierre and Marie Curie Centre (CPMC) and the Nuclear Medicine Centre at CHU Bab El Oued, which have been designated as Regional Collaboration Centres under the “Rays of Hope” initiative for Africa.

Mr. Latroche reiterated Algeria’s determination to strengthen the expertise of African countries within the framework of the Regional Cooperation Agreement for Africa on Research, Development, and Training in Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA).

For his part, the representative of the IAEA Director General commended Algeria’s progress in utilising nuclear applications for development goals, as well as its contribution to enhancing the expertise and capacities of fellow African countries in the peaceful use of nuclear techniques.
