Algeria: FM Attaf holds bilateral talks with international counterparts

ALGIERS – The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, continued his bilateral talks on Saturday in New York with several of his counterparts on the sidelines of the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly, according to a ministry statement.

Mr. Attaf met with the Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto, the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, the Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass, said the statement.

Discussions between FM Attaf and his Brazilian counterpart focused on “examining ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries” and “exchanging views on major international and regional issues,” added the statement.

During the meeting with the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, both parties praised the “positive results of their bilateral cooperation, in light of the progress made in implementing the conclusions of the Joint Commission’s 4th session held in June 2023 in Caracas.” They also commended “the quality of political consultation and bilateral coordination on various international and regional issues, based on both countries’ commitment to the principles of international law and the values of the UN Charter.”

The talks with the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister provided an opportunity to “applaud the privileged level of the bilateral political relations and to examine ways to strengthen and develop these relations economically, particularly through holding the Algerian-Kuwaiti Joint Commission as soon as possible,” according to the same source.

With the Djiboutian Foreign Minister, FM Attaf reviewed “the prospects for developing bilateral cooperation in various areas and strengthening coordination within the framework of the African Union.”

Moreover, the Minister discussed with the Bosnian Foreign Minister the “prospects for consolidating bilateral relations by enhancing mutual diplomatic representation and promoting cooperation in the energy sector and other economic areas.”

The meeting with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister allowed for a “review of developments in the Ukrainian crisis” and “examining ways to strengthen political dialogue and develop economic relations between the two countries.”

Additionally, the Foreign Minister and the U.S. Under Secretary of State praised “the remarkable level of political dialogue between Algeria and the United States,” highlighting “notable progress in economic cooperation between the two countries,” the statement concluded.
