Algeria Explores Cooperation Prospects with AU Infrastructure, Energy Commissioner

ALGIERS — Sonelgaz Group CEO Mourad Adjal received Wednesday in Algiers the new African Union (AU) Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Lerato Mataboge, and her delegation to discuss bilateral cooperation prospects, particularly supporting Sonelgaz’s expansion across Africa as a leading energy operator in the region, Sonelgaz said in a statement.

This meeting which took place in the presence of a representative of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energy, and senior Sonelgaz executives, is part of implementing recommendations from the country’s high authorities to boost the connection of African countries to the electrical grid and back regional development efforts, while advancing Sonelgaz’s strategy to bolster its continental presence, the source said.

On this occasion, Mataboge expressed the AU’s interest in leveraging Sonelgaz’s expertise and capabilities in the energy field, given the growing needs of African countries, notably in terms of electricity.

She underscored the need to relaunch cooperation between the group and the Department of Infrastructure and Energy (DIE) of the AU Commission for the supply of African countries with energy.

In this respect, Adjal affirmed that Sonelgaz shared the same vision and concerns as the AU regarding support for African energy supply.

He outlined the group’s experience in electricity production, transmission and distribution, as well as gas transmission and distribution, along with its achievements in industry, training, maintenance, exports and renewable energy.
