Algeria, EU Explore Strategic Cooperation in Hydrocarbons, Mining

ALGIERS, October 21, 2025 – Algerian State Minister, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab received on Tuesday at the ministry headquarters the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado, in the presence of Secretary of State for Mines Karima Bakir Tafer and senior sector officials.
The meeting reviewed the current status and prospects of Algeria-EU cooperation, as well as ways to strengthen it within the framework of strategic dialogue in the energy sector, particularly in hydrocarbons and mining, the ministry said.
Both sides also discussed progress in energy cooperation, notably regarding Europe’s natural gas supply, development of fields to increase production capacity, and collaboration in modern technologies aimed at reducing emissions, lowering carbon footprint, and developing carbon capture and environmental protection projects.
The development of hydrogen under the Southern Gas Corridor project linking Algeria to Europe via Italy, Germany, and Austria was also on the agenda.
Arkab emphasized Algeria’s call for European companies to strengthen their presence in the national market through investment in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors, noting that recent legal and regulatory reforms in these sectors have created a favorable and transparent investment climate, conducive to partnership development and attractive to foreign investors.
Discussions also addressed investment opportunities in Algeria’s mining sector and the establishment of mutually beneficial partnerships with European firms, highlighting knowledge transfer, training, and the use of modern techniques in research, exploration, processing, and resource development, including rare earth elements and strategic minerals.
Mellado expressed satisfaction with the level of strategic dialogue between Algeria and the EU in the energy sector, noting growing European business interest in the Algerian market and praising Algeria as a reliable partner in ensuring Europe’s energy security.
The ambassador also expressed the EU’s willingness to strengthen cooperation in green and blue hydrogen production, as well as the exploitation and processing of strategic minerals to support industries, including renewable energy sectors.
