Algeria: Energy Minister Talks Cooperation with Bosnian Counterpart

ALGIERS, February 5, 2025 – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, met on Wednesday in Algiers with Vedran Lakic, the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Industry of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They discussed strategies to enhance bilateral cooperation, as stated by the ministry.

The meeting took place at the ministry’s headquarters in Algiers and was attended by Secretary of State Noureddine Yassaâ, who oversees renewable energies, along with leaders from Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and Sonarem, as well as senior officials from both nations.

During the discussions, both parties highlighted “the depth of the friendly and historical relations uniting the two countries,” exploring prospects for further collaboration in energy, mining, and renewable resources. They praised the partnership between Sonelgaz and Energoinvest, describing it as “a successful model” of joint cooperation.

The talks specifically concentrated on investment opportunities and partnerships within the hydrocarbons sector, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), electricity production, transportation, distribution, and network development. A strong emphasis was placed on utilizing advanced technologies and enhancing local industrial capabilities for the manufacturing of equipment and spare parts for the hydrocarbons and electricity industries.

Both parties stressed the significance of knowledge and technology transfer, along with the expansion of training programs aimed at bolstering expertise in these sectors, as noted in the statement.

The discussions also covered the development of photovoltaic solar energy projects, green hydrogen, and wind energy, ensuring the integration of these sources into electrical systems to support the energy transition process and improve energy efficiency.

Cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, as well as geological studies, mapping, exploration, exploitation, and processing of mineral resources, was also emphasized. The focus was on establishing mutually beneficial partnerships.

On this occasion, Arkab expressed Algeria’s readiness to share its expertise in natural resource management, renewable energy, and carbon footprint reduction. He remarked that “close cooperation” with the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina could open up vast opportunities for developing joint projects that would benefit both nations.

Lakic, for his part, commended the quality of bilateral relations between Algeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina and expressed his desire to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to leveraging all available opportunities to expand cooperation in electricity, renewable energies, and mining. Additionally, he acknowledged the success of Energoinvest in Algeria, which reflects significant potential for enhancing economic partnership.

“Efforts are underway to bolster the company’s presence in Algeria by enhancing its workforce, expanding its office, and effectively engaging in the execution of current and future projects in the country, especially in the sectors of electricity and renewable energy,” he added.

At the end of the meeting, participants emphasized the importance of capitalizing on available opportunities in both countries and working towards establishing a strategic and sustainable partnership that benefits the mutual interests of both nations, as noted in the statement.
