Algeria commits to ensuring international implementation of decision to classify slavery, deportation, and colonialism as acts of genocide

Algeria on Monday welcomed the adoption of the decision by the 38th ordinary session of the African Union Conference of Heads of State and Government, which classified slavery, deportation, and colonialism as war crimes against humanity and acts of genocide committed against African peoples.

In a statement, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “Algeria warmly welcomes the adoption of the resolution by the 38th ordinary session of the African Union Summit, which recognises slavery, deportation, and colonialism as war crimes against humanity and acts of genocide committed against African peoples.”

The ministry emphasised that, given Algeria’s own 132 years of suffering under the horrors of settler colonialism, the country supports and endorses this decision.

The statement further noted that the decision taken at the African summit, which concluded yesterday in Addis Ababa, represents an important step in the pursuit of recognition, justice, and compensation for the crimes committed against the African peoples.

“Algeria is honoured to have been entrusted, alongside South Africa, Togo, and Ghana, with ensuring the international implementation of this resolution,” the statement said.

“In line with the summit’s request, Algeria will spare no effort to fulfil this important mission with unwavering commitment and determination, drawing inspiration from the tremendous sacrifices made by African peoples in their struggle for independence and sovereignty,” the source added.
