Algeria, China Sign Framework Agreement for Digital Development and Tourism

A framework agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in digital development and the promotion of tourism and hospitality products and services was signed on Tuesday evening in Algiers between the Hotel-Tourism and Thermal Group (HTT) and Xiamen Airlines International Travel Service CO.LTD.

The signing ceremony took place at the El Djazair hotel and was presided over by the Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Houria Meddahi. The event was attended by government officials, senior state executives, and accredited ambassadors in Algeria, coinciding with the conclusion of the 24th edition of the International Tourism and Travel Fair (SITEV 2025).

In her remarks, Meddahi emphasized that this agreement with the People’s Republic of China aligns with efforts to digitize the tourism sector, which has emerged as a strategic priority. She underscored that Algeria’s immense tourist potential necessitates a digital marketing approach that accurately represents its standing.

The minister noted that the agreement also signifies a continued commitment to strengthening cooperative ties between the two countries within the tourism sector, especially considering the strong Algerian-Chinese relations built on friendship and mutual understanding, as expressed by the leaders of both nations.

Meddahi pointed out that this signing adds to the fruitful collaboration established with Chinese partners in tourism, following tangible initiatives led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.

Chinese Ambassador to Algeria, Dong Guangli, expressed his contentment with the current state of Algerian-Chinese relations, highlighting both nations’ eagerness to expand and promote connections across various fields, including culture and tourism—key drivers for boosting their economies in mutual benefit.

The ambassador also recalled Algeria’s rich cultural heritage and tourism assets, affirming that tourism is deeply intertwined with culture.

Regarding the outcomes of the 24th SITEV edition, Meddahi reported that the fair showcased “high-quality” participation, featuring 340 exhibitors from 27 friendly nations, along with 38 startups specializing in the digitization of tourism services. Additionally, a substantial number of national companies and organizations involved in tourism activities—including airlines, Algiers airport, urban transport companies, and insurance firms—also participated.

Moreover, there was notable involvement from both Algerian and international artisans presenting handcrafted creations that reflect the richness of cultural heritage.

The fair concluded with awards recognizing the best participants. The prize for the best-designed Algerian pavilion was awarded to the Ministry of Culture and Arts, while Air Algérie received the award for the most innovative pavilion.

The award for the most attractive pavilion was presented to a startup from the Batna region, while the prize for the best foreign pavilion was awarded to the People’s Republic of China. Palestine received a special award for the “Pavilion of Courage and Perseverance,” and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) was similarly honored with a special prize.

In addition, the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts recognized the “Fennec Booking” pavilion with the award for the best tourism application, while a startup from the Djanet region was honored for having the best digital solution. Another accolade was given to the El Waha troupe from the Brezina municipality in El Bayadh.

The 24th edition of SITEV, which took place from July 12 to 15 under the slogan “Travel to the heart of Algeria and enjoy authentic tourism and a thousand-year-old civilization,” was described by organizers as a significant opportunity to strengthen partnerships, promote the exchange of experiences, and encourage investment in a sector regarded as a vital driver of economic development.
