Algeria Chairs UN Security Council Meeting on Yemen

NEW YORK (United Nations) – The Security Council is holding its monthly public briefing and closed-door consultations on Yemen, under the chairmanship of Algeria.
The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, will deliver public briefings.
The head of the United Nations Mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), Major General Michael Beary, is also expected to present his latest briefing to the Council during closed-door consultations.
During the meeting, speakers and some Council members are expected to address ongoing Zionist aggressions as an additional source of instability for Yemen and the wider region, while calling for de-escalation.
They will also emphasize the need respect international law, international humanitarian law (IHL), and the protection of civilian infrastructure.
The Special Envoy is likely to update the Council on his recent visits to the region, including to Sanaa (his first visit to the city since May 2023).
He will further stress the importance of progress toward a roadmap for peace and a Yemeni-led political process, while addressing the economic and humanitarian challenges facing the Yemeni people.
