Algeria–Chad: Talks On Strengthening Partnership in Hydrocarbons and Mining

ALGIERS, April 2, 2026 – The Secretary-General of the Algerian Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Miloud Medjelled, received on Thursday in Algiers a delegation from Chad’s Ministry of Petroleum, Mines and Geology, with whom he discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of hydrocarbons and mining, according to a ministry statement.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of several officials, took place as part of the Chadian delegation’s visit to Algeria to participate in the 4th edition of the Metal Steel & Mining Algeria Expo 2026, held from March 30 to April 1 at the Pins Maritimes Exhibition Center.
The meeting provided an opportunity to review the current state and prospects of Algerian-Chadian relations, described as fraternal and historical, particularly following the signing in December 2025 of a memorandum of discussions between the two countries in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors, considered “an important step” in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Both sides also discussed the visit made by the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, to Chad in January 2026, as well as his participation, as a representative of President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the SEMICA Chad 2026 international exhibition.
During the meeting, discussions focused on prospects for expanding cooperation, particularly through the exchange of expertise related to administrative organization and legal frameworks governing hydrocarbons and mining activities. The Chadian side expressed interest in benefiting from Algeria’s experience in these areas.
On the sidelines of the visit, the Chadian delegation also held meetings with officials from the Sonarem Group, focusing on developing bilateral relations, particularly in the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, which resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two parties.
This agreement aims to promote cooperation and define the framework governing partnership conditions and mechanisms, with a focus on several priority areas, including the development of geological research and mining exploration, the exchange of technologies and expertise in sustainable mining, and strengthening human resource capacities through knowledge and skills transfer, as well as improving the qualifications of personnel in Chad’s mining sector.
