Algeria Celebrates Africa Day, Highlighting Role in Promoting Unity and Justice

ALGIERS — The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs held an official ceremony on Monday in Algiers to mark Africa Day, which is celebrated annually on May 25, coinciding with the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union).

During the ceremony held at the ministry headquarters, the ambassador of the Republic of Namibia to Algeria, dean of the African diplomatic corps accredited to Algeria, Panduleni Kaino Shingenge, commended “Algeria’s crucial role, beacon of resistance and leadership at the UN Security Council, where it has advocated for peace, stability and the rights of oppressed peoples worldwide.”

She affirmed that “Algeria’s firm commitment to mediation, conflict resolution and women’s empowerment mirrors the very values of African unity.”

She also congratulated Algeria on its election as vice-president of the African Union Commission, noting that “this prestigious position demonstrates its commitment to Africa’s collective vision of sovereignty, solidarity and progress.”

As Algeria takes on this vital leading role, “we remain convinced,” she said, “that its expertise and firm commitment to African unity will continue to strengthen the continent’s journey toward justice, prosperity and lasting peace.”

The African official also called for “stressing the importance of justice and unity in demanding equity and restoring rights and dignity,” adding “together we will build a strong, sovereign, united and respected Africa.”

The ceremony, attended by the Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, and the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of African Affairs, Bakhta Selma Mansouri, as well as members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Algeria, featured the screening of a documentary film about Africa Day and a photo exhibition titled “Algeria’s role in backing liberation movements in Africa.”
