Algeria Calls for Support for LLD Countries to Boost Global Value Chain Contributions

Algeria’s Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, underscored the importance of providing technical and technological support to landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) to increase their contributions to global value chains. This statement was made during his address from Awaza, Turkmenistan, as noted in a communiqué from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.

Chaib participated in a high-level roundtable at the UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in Awaza, focusing on “seizing the transformative potential of trade, trade facilitation and regional integration for landlocked developing countries.” He stressed the necessity of fostering a spirit of solidarity and cooperation to deliver essential technical and technological assistance to these nations, thereby enhancing their roles in global value chains, according to the communiqué.

During this occasion, Chaib recalled Algeria’s efforts within regional frameworks to actively engage in infrastructure projects aimed at connecting landlocked African countries. He remarked that Algeria has consistently advocated for the establishment of a fair and balanced global economic system and is currently working to take decisive action in initiatives designed to stabilize global markets for essential goods, particularly energy, as stated by the same source.

Additionally, Algeria is preparing to host the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), scheduled for September 4-10. Chaib noted that this event would provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the trade potential of the African continent.

On Friday, Chaib also took part in the closing session of the UN conference, which concluded with the adoption of the “Awaza Political Declaration” and the implementation of the “Awaza Action Program (2024-2034),” as adopted by a resolution of the UN General Assembly last December.
