Algeria Calls for an Emergency UN Security Council Meeting on Palestine

On Monday, Algeria requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the recent developments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This call comes in response to the escalating raids by Zionist occupation forces in the West Bank and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, in coordination with the mission of the State of Palestine at the UN in New York.

The meeting is anticipated to take place before the end of the week under Slovenia’s presidency of the Security Council, as a severe security campaign continues in the West Bank, resulting in nearly 700 civilian fatalities since last October, including over 150 children. Furthermore, this campaign has inflicted significant damage on infrastructure, with losses estimated in the millions of dollars. The violence perpetrated against Palestinians in Gaza has also led to a death toll nearing 41,000.

The purpose of the meeting is to allow members of the UN Security Council to reaffirm their support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and to reiterate their commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable path toward achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. Additionally, they are expected to denounce the policies of the occupying authorities that aim to undermine any prospects for the establishment of a Palestinian state and to disregard the historical rights of the Palestinian people.
