In a significant achievement for Algeria’s energy sector, the country became the top natural gas exporter to Spain in November 2024, supplying nearly 50% of Spain’s total natural gas imports. This accomplishment highlights Algeria’s growing role as a key player in the European energy market.
Official data from Spain’s state-owned gas company, Enagás, revealed that Algeria’s natural gas exports reached a total of 13.694 gigawatt-hours (GWh) for November. Of this, 9.971 GWh were delivered through the Medgaz pipeline, and 3.723 GWh were supplied in liquefied natural gas (LNG) form. This volume surpassed both the United States and Russia, which supplied 21.5% and 10.9% of Spain’s gas imports, respectively.
This shift underscores Algeria’s increasing importance in Europe’s energy landscape, driven by strategic investments in infrastructure and its role as a reliable energy partner.
The Medgaz pipeline plays a key role in this achievement, providing a direct and efficient route for Algerian gas to reach Spain. As Europe diversifies its energy sources, Algeria’s ability to meet rising demand positions it as a crucial contributor to European energy security.
