Algeria Assumes Presidency of Key ILO Committee on Labour Standards

GENEVA – Algeria took on Monday the presidency of the Committee on the Application of International Labour Standards (CAS), as part of the 113th International Labour Conference, which is being held in Geneva from June 2 to 12.

Algeria’s election to the presidency of this prestigious committee mirrors the confidence and recognition it enjoys among the members of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and social partners, thanks to its constructive engagement in the different dynamics of the organization, as well as its pioneering experience in matters of social protection, strengthening of social dialogue and defense of workers’ rights.

During its mandate, Algeria will have the responsibility of conducting the work of this essential instance, which constitutes the cornerstone of the ILO’s control system.

The committee will examine several important reports, notably its general report, the report of the Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations, as well as the report of the Committee on Freedom of Association.

In his opening address, the president of the committee commended Algeria’s positive experience in its interactions with the ILO’s control bodies, particularly through the submission of reports on the application of ratified conventions, which are examined by the Committee of Experts responsible for evaluating the conformity of national legislation and practices with international labour standards.

Following this constructive cooperation, Algeria has undertaken reforms aimed at aligning its national legislation with the standards contained in international conventions, thus illustrating its firm will to promote and strengthen workers’ rights.

By assuming the presidency of the committee on the Application of International Labour Standards, Algeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to continue its efforts in favor of promoting decent work, social justice and the defense of workers’ rights, in perfect coherence with the goals of the International Labour Organization.
