BECHAR – Algerian Minister of Public Works and Infrastructures, Lakhdar Rekhroukh, expressed his satisfaction on Tuesday regarding the progress of the first 200 km section of the Bechar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet railway project, which is poised to play a crucial role in the country’s economic development.
During a press conference held as part of an inspection visit, Rekhroukh, accompanied by Algerian Minister of Transport, Mohamed El-Habib Zahana, praised the ongoing efforts on the railway line. “We hope that this section will be completed on schedule, which is early 2025,” Rekhroukh emphasized, noting the importance of timely delivery for the project’s success.
The railway line, which spans 950 km, is designed to transport raw iron from the Gara-Djebilet deposit and strengthen connectivity between southern and northern Algeria. Minister Zahana highlighted the economic impact of the project, stating that it will significantly enhance the transport of both passengers and goods, contributing to the nation’s growth.
Cherif Grira, CEO of Cosider Public Works, confirmed the substantial progress made on the Bechar-Abadla line, a key part of the project. “We have recorded 94% completion in earthworks and 28% for welding,” Grira said, adding that this 96 km section is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2025.
