Algeria: 16 Illegal Somali Migrants Rescued Off the Coast of Jijel (MDN)

ALGIERS, February 5, 2025 – Units from the Algerian Coast Guard, operating under the Naval Forces Command, successfully rescued 16 Somali nationals who were attempting to immigrate illegally off the northern coast of Jijel, according to a statement released by the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) on Wednesday.
“In line with their humanitarian mission, the Coast Guard units received a distress signal on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 8:45 PM, reporting the presence of migrants in danger approximately 40 nautical miles north of El-Aouana in Jijel province,” the statement detailed.
“Promptly, and under the supervision of the National Center for Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Operations of the Coast Guard, a rescue and evacuation operation was initiated, successfully assisting sixteen (16) Somali nationals, including two (02) women who were in critical health conditions,” the source added.
“The individuals were then transported to the port of Djen Djen in Jijel, where they received initial medical care before being transferred to a hospital for further treatment,” the statement continued.
“This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the Coast Guard units within the Naval Forces and their commitment to intervening, rescuing, and providing assistance at sea to save human lives,” emphasized the same source.
