African Championships for Cadets and Juniors: Algerians Judokas Aim for Continental Title in Luanda

The Algerian judo teams for cadets and juniors are striving for the continental title at the African Championships being held in Luanda, Angola, as stated by Nourreddine Attout, Director of National Teams (DEN), in an interview with APS.

The cadet competitions began on Thursday morning, featuring 18 Algerian judokas, including nine female athletes.

“The Algerian cadet team, which consists of 18 judokas, nine of whom are girls, is determined to secure the African title. This event also provides an opportunity for the technical staff to evaluate the team’s skills and select the best judokas for future sporting events,” Attout explained to APS.

In this context, the Algerian Judo Federation (FAJ) has developed a comprehensive work program focusing on short, medium, and long-term goals to prepare the cadet selection for the 2032 Olympic Games while supporting their efforts to represent Algeria honorably in upcoming international competitions.

The DEN noted that “the technical staff has made it possible for all Algerian champions to participate in this continental competition, without excluding any athlete. These champions possess the potential to earn medals in this edition, which features 139 judokas (72 boys and 67 girls) from 19 African countries.”

Moreover, the federation confirmed that similar objectives have been established for the junior category (under 20 years old), which will also compete in Luanda on July 19 and 20.

Algeria will be represented by 17 judokas (9 boys and 8 girls), with aspirations to claim the continental title as well.

To adequately prepare for this significant event, which will include participants from 20 countries, the junior national team conducted an intensive closed training camp in mid-May at the Soukane Brothers School in Fouka (Tipasa).

This preparation was overseen by former international judoka Omar Meridja, who currently serves as a coach within the International Judo Federation (IJF).
