Africa Deserves a Permanent Seat on the UN Security Council, Says Sassou-Nguesso

Africa must obtain a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, declared the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, during the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

“It is clear that the Security Council in its current composition no longer reflects the geopolitical balance of our world. It is therefore urgent to reform it not in theory, but in practice,” he stressed.

He added that “Africa can no longer remain marginalized (…) It is a continent of the future, of youth, of potential to which we must guarantee full and complete participation in global decision-making. I say it, I say it with force: Africa deserves permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council.”

From the UN podium, several African leaders, including the Presidents of the Central African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, and of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, also emphasized the need to grant the continent two permanent seats and two additional non-permanent seats on the Security Council.
