ALGIERS, March 14, 2025 – On Friday, Algerian Sports Minister Walid Sadi expressed Algeria’s pride in its connection to the African continent and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the noble ideals of the Olympic movement in Africa, which seeks to promote the values and principles outlined in the Olympic Charter.
This declaration was made during his opening remarks at the 22nd General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ACNOA), held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center in Algiers.
Welcoming representatives from the 54 member countries of ACNOA, as well as members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and esteemed guests, the minister emphasized Algeria’s role in upholding the principles of the Olympic Charter.
“My presence among you today carries particular significance, reflecting our steadfast support for the noble message of the Olympic movement, which aims to disseminate the values and principles of the Olympic Charter throughout our continent—one rich in history, achievements, and cultural diversity. We take pride in belonging to this exemplary continent, which is undergoing dynamic development across various sectors due to the awareness and vigilance of its people regarding the necessity to intensify efforts to address contemporary challenges, confront pressing issues, and advance with a professional spirit rooted in science, technology, talent, creativity, and innovation,” stated Sadi.
In discussing Algeria’s experience in promoting and developing sports nationwide as a fundamental human right aligned with the principles of the Olympic Charter, he stressed that “the advancement of sports in Algeria is a top priority for the country’s leadership, prominently featured in public policy. This commitment is evident through the ongoing support of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who closely monitors the progress of national, continental, and international sports initiatives, ensuring optimal conditions for young individuals to showcase their talents—particularly through the promotion of school and university athletics, as well as vocational training programs.”
He added that this commitment is complemented by an increase in programs and projects aimed at constructing sports infrastructures that meet international standards, benefiting both athletic pursuits and youth engagement.
“This motivates us, as a sporting community, to further commit ourselves and work diligently to create favorable conditions for authentic sports development, grounded in the values of fair play, respect, and integrity. We aim to transform major sporting events into opportunities for exchange and connection between peoples and nations, embodying the noble principles upheld by the Olympic Charter.”
The Sports Minister also acknowledged the substantial efforts made by ACNOA to promote Olympic culture within the realm of sports, highlighting its embodiment of educational, ethical, and human values.
He underscored that “sports, through its institutions, champions, and dedicated individuals, has consistently proven to be a positive and effective means of restoring the African individual’s position on numerous occasions and affirming their presence among the global sports elite.”
A prime example is the recent Olympic Games, which provided a platform for the continent’s champions to shine on the international stage with remarkable victories. This experience exemplifies the universality of the Olympic message, rooted in excellence, friendship, and respect.
“I am convinced that ANOCA plays a significant and effective role in fulfilling the aspirations of those who came before us and the ambitions of African youth to reach the highest levels as swiftly as possible with unwavering determination. Together, we are striving to integrate the Olympic motto within a humanitarian vision,” concluded the minister.
