A3+ Group Calls for Greater UN Support and Resources for AU Peacekeeping Operations

The A3+ Group in the Security Council (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana) called on Tuesday in New York for providing the African Union (AU) with the necessary resources and trust to carry out peacekeeping operations more effectively.” As the primary actor responsible for responding to crises, the African Union should be provided with the resources and trust it needs to effectively carry out peacekeeping operations on behalf of the Security Council and the international community,” said Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amar Bendjama, on behalf of the A3+ Group.

“UNSC Resolution 2719 provides a clear framework for funding AU peacekeeping operations using UN contributions, marking a step forward in ensuring regular, adequate, and sustainable resources. However, setting a ceiling on the financial contributions provided by the UN is not a viable solution. We must work innovatively, leveraging the recent provisions of the Council to explore new approaches,” Bendjama said during a Security Council meeting on UN-AU cooperation.

In this regard, the A3+ Group urged the Security Council to adapt its working methods, taking into account the AU’s determination to enable Africa to address its major challenges.
