8 May 1945 massacres: Opportunity to Remember Pivotal Stage in Algerian People’s Struggle

ALGIERS- The Algerian Minister of Mujahideen and Rights-holders, Laïd Rebiga, affirmed on Tuesday, in Algiers, that the 80th anniversary of 8 May 1945 massacres was an opportunity to remember a pivotal stage in the struggle of the Algerian people for the recovery of national sovereignty, emphasizing that this commemoration was part of the achievements made by victorious Algeria.

Speaking during a Parliamentary Day organized by the parliamentary group of the National Liberation Front (FLN) party at the People’s National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament) on the Algeria-European Union association agreement, the minister underscored that the anniversary of May 8 “has a special symbolism for the entire Algerian people,” highlighting that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has decreed May 8 as the National Day of Memory, based on the “national consensus around this pivotal date marking the transition from political struggle to armed struggle.”

The commemoration of this anniversary “comes as part of the achievements made by victorious Algeria in all fields and at all levels,” he noted.

Welcoming this economic meeting, Rebiga recalled that the President of the Republic “has committed to elevating Algeria to the highest levels of progress in all fields, particularly economic,” which is “a priority for Algeria,” he said.

The meeting, which was attended by experts and officials from the fields of foreign trade and statistics, addressed several topics, including the customs aspects of the association agreement and the challenges and perspectives in the agricultural sector as part of the revision of this agreement.

During this parliamentary day, which will result in a series of recommendations, national press outlets, including Algeria Press Service (APS), and the 8 May 1945 Association were honored on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
