Malawi: At Least 13 Dead After Heavy Rains

Four days of heavy rainfall in Malawi have resulted in the deaths of 13 people, who were either killed by collapsing walls or swept away while crossing flooded rivers, authorities said Thursday.
This largely rural southern African country was hit by torrential rains that caused flooding between Sunday and Wednesday, according to the disaster management agency.
The agency reported 13 deaths and 35 injuries. One of the hardest-hit areas borders central Mozambique, where heavy rains have also fallen and authorities have warned of a risk of flooding.
Further rainfall is expected in Malawi in the coming days, the meteorological service said.
Malawi is vulnerable to climate shocks, including a drought in 2024 and a devastating cyclone the previous year that killed more than 1,000 people.
