Zambia: Two Deaths and 17 New Cholera Cases Recorded in 24 Hours

Authorities in Zambia announced Thursday that two people had died and 17 new cases of Cholera had been recorded in the past 24 hours, urging citizens to take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
According to the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI), 14 of the new cases were recorded in Lusaka, the capital, while the other three were reported in the district of Mpulungu in northern Zambia, along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
“The two deaths were recorded in the Kanyama neighborhood in Lusaka,” said Doreen Shempela, Director of Public Health Policy, Diplomacy and Communication at the ZNPHI, during a television appearance.
Shempela added that “health authorities continue to work with partners to strengthen laboratory capacity, surveillance, and treatment of the disease,” which generally sees an increase during the rainy season.
