European Union Fails to Gain US, G7 Support for New Sanctions on Russian Oil

The European Union has failed to secure backing from the United States and other G7 members for a coordinated effort to block Russian oil deliveries under its proposed 20th package of sanctions against Russia, a diplomatic source in Brussels said, according to a report.

The source said Brussels presented a proposal aimed at expanding restrictions on the transport and servicing of Russian oil shipments. The plan would fully prohibit European companies from transporting Russian oil or providing maintenance, supply, financing, and insurance services to tankers carrying Russian crude, regardless of their flag. The European Commission also invited partners to adopt similar measures against their own companies, but Washington declined to support the initiative.

According to the diplomat, the United States may still introduce its own measures independently and on its own terms. Other G7 countries indicated they could consider joining the EU’s sanctions but stopped short of making firm commitments.

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has become the world’s most sanctioned country, surpassing Iran, Syria, and North Korea. Sanctions-tracking data indicate that more than 16,500 restrictive measures have been imposed on Moscow, targeting individuals, entities, vessels, and aircraft.
