Algeria, Niger Reactivate Electricity Partnership

A virtual meeting between Algeria’s Sonelgaz and Niger’s national electricity company Nigelec was held Wednesday to strengthen bilateral cooperation, attended by senior officials from both companies and supervised by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energy, resulted in the reactivation of the bilateral partnership agreement between the two companies, Sonelgaz said in a statement.
The meeting follows the outcomes of the fraternity and working visit by the President of Niger to Algeria on 15 and 16 February. Discussions focused on accelerating cooperation and partnership as well as finalising and adopting agreements currently under review.
As part of the revitalised partnership, a team of Sonelgaz specialists will be sent to Niamey to assess the selected site and begin studies for a new power generation plant to strengthen Niger’s electricity supply.
The framework also includes a technical exchange programme in which Sonelgaz will host a Nigelec team for integrated training at its Engineering Training School in Adrar.
Sonelgaz reaffirmed its readiness, through its subsidiaries, advanced infrastructure and extensive expertise across various energy sectors, to ensure the success of the partnership, opening new development horizons that serve the mutual interests of both countries and reinforce the dynamic of rapprochement between their peoples.
Nigelec officials welcomed the relaunch of joint projects, describing it as a new impetus for bilateral cooperation.
