39th African Union Summit Kicks Off in Addis Ababa

The 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union opened on Saturday, in Addis Ababa, under the theme: “Assuring Sustainable water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
The meeting is attended by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Participants are set to convene over two days (February 14 and 15) to explore ways to enhance continental cooperation and better coordinate efforts among member states, with particular emphasis on advancing economic, political, and social integration.
Also participating in the summit are António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League; Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine; as well as the summit’s guest of honor, Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy.
A report will also be presented on the African Union’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” outlining the range of activities undertaken by member states.
Additionally, the agenda includes a report by the African Union Peace and Security Council, detailing its activities during 2025, a report on the institutional reforms of the African Union, as well as a report on the Union’s participation in the most recent summit of the Group of 20.
