Energy: Algeria, EU Hold 6th High-Level Dialogue, Reaffirm Strategic Partnership

Algeria and the European Union held their sixth high-level energy dialogue in Algiers on Thursday, reaffirming their strategic partnership amid global energy challenges and an accelerating energy transition.

The meeting was co-chaired by Algeria’s Minister of State for Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies Mohamed Arkab, Energy Minister Mourad Adjal and European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen.

According to a joint statement, the talks were held within the framework of the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding on the strategic energy partnership between Algeria and the EU, aimed at strengthening energy ties while maintaining a balanced approach to mutual interests.

The meeting reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed the shared commitment to deepen exchanges through sectoral working groups and expert groups on natural gas, electricity, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Both sides welcomed advances in areas including natural gas, renewable hydrogen, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, renewable energy development, electricity interconnections and energy efficiency.

They underlined Algeria’s role as a reliable and sustainable supplier of natural gas to the EU, and the EU’s role as a provider of clean energy technologies and solutions supporting Algeria’s energy transition.

The parties discussed prospects for developing Algeria’s hydrocarbons sector, particularly natural gas, describing it as a shared strategic priority, and expressed a desire to see increased European investment in the sector.

They also highlighted Algeria’s competitive advantages, including its natural resources, human capital and energy infrastructure, to support the development of low-carbon technologies, particularly renewable energy and hydrogen, with the aim of strengthening its position as a key regional supplier of renewable electricity and hydrogen.

Since the last ministerial meeting in October 2023, three expert group sessions have been held, along with seminars on the green hydrogen economy and methane emissions reduction. Priorities identified in the dialogue have been incorporated into the TaqatHy+ technical cooperation programme, launched in April 2025 and co-financed by the EU and Germany.

The two sides discussed cooperation on reducing methane emissions and agreed to enhance coordination to ensure harmonised implementation of the EU methane regulation, with the aim of preserving and optimising Algerian gas access to the EU market.

They also reviewed progress in implementing their respective renewable and green hydrogen strategies, including discussions on the SoutH2 Corridor project linking Algeria to Europe and EU support for energy transition and hydrogen development projects.

Both parties acknowledged the growing importance of energy infrastructure development, particularly electricity interconnections between Algeria and the EU, and agreed to step up cooperation on regulatory requirements and investment to advance these projects.

They welcomed the progress made in bilateral energy cooperation and reiterated their commitment to further consolidating the partnership within the framework of the high-level energy dialogue.
