Algeria Says AU’s Participation in G20 Should End Africa’s Marginalisation – Attaf

Algeria wants the African Union’s participation in the G20 to help end the continent’s marginalization and exclusion, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said on Thursday, stressing the need for thorough preparation.
Speaking on the G20 report during the second and final day of the African Union Executive Council meeting, Attaf said Algeria “reaffirms the importance of optimal preparation for the AU’s participation in the G20,” adding that “this participation is not an end in itself, but a means that we hope will help lift our continent out of marginalization and exclusion.”
“In this context, my country’s delegation supports the measures adopted to share representation duties between the Commission and the rotating presidency, and proposes drawing inspiration from the Oran process to unify Africa’s voice within the G20,” he added.
Attaf also commended “the sister Republic of South Africa for its outstanding and remarkable presidency of the G20,” assuring it of Algeria’s support and solidarity in addressing the challenges it faces in that capacity.
He said the Johannesburg summit would be remembered as the first G20 summit chaired by an African country and held on African soil, as well as the first to affirm Africa’s place, listen to its voice and place the continent’s priorities and aspirations at the heart of global economic development issues.
The minister welcomed the summit’s conclusions, describing them as “an important gain for our continent, which should be leveraged within the framework of the AU’s accession to the G20 as a permanent member.”
