The Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, affirmed, on Wednesday in Addis Ababa, Algeria’s support for any effort to strengthe the African Union (AU) and pull it out of the logic of self-isolation.
In an address at the 48th AU Executive Council, held in Addis Ababa, on the occasion of discussion of the Permanent Representatives Committee report, Attaf stated that “Algeria supports any effort that strengthens our organization and pulls it out of self-isolation, bolsters its continental and international presence, and enables it to deal realistically and responsibly with current challenges, wether continental or global,” adding that “Algeria fully backs our Commission and the rotating presidency of our organization.”
As for the AU Summit currently being prepared, the Minister of State emphasized that it “assumes great importance in view of the general international context in which it is being held,” a context “we all recognize threatens to marginalize Africa, sideline its issues and priorities, and neutralize its role and voice.” From this perspective, Attaf added, “our work should not be limited to immediate issues of internal management, but must extend to a broader horizon to establish a truly collective forward-looking vision, one that precisely identifies the dangers and threats facing us, adapts our joint work to the rapid transformations surrounding us, and restores value to our unity project as an indispensable strategic choice for safeguarding our common destiny in today’s turbulent world and in tomorrow’s world, which we hope will better address our concerns, interests, and aspirations.”
