Algerian President: Ties With Saudi Arabia Are More Than Fraternal

Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said on Saturday that Algeria cultivated good relations based on mutual benefit with various countries.

During his regular meeting with representatives of the Algerian media, the President said that Algeria “has good, cordial and friendly relations with many countries, relations based on mutual benefit.” He highlighted the “special relations” that Algeria enjoys with European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, and others.

He added that Algeria also upholds “good relations” with major countries such as the United States, Russia, and China.

Regarding relations with France, the Algerian President simply commended the “courage and frankness” of Ségolène Royal (President of the France-Algeria Association), who recently visited Algeria, saying that “she is welcome in our country.”

One Exception in Algeria’s Arab Ties

Regarding relations with Arab countries, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described them as “fraternal,” noting that Algeria’s policy is “to focus on our internal issues. What happens in any other country does not concern us.” He added, however, that there is “a small state that tried to interfere in our elections and in other matters, and I hope we will not regret the day we came to know it.”

President Tebboune also addressed Algerian–Saudi relations, saying they are “more than fraternal,” and stressing that anything that affects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia also affects Algeria. He also praised Algeria’s relations with the State of Qatar, highlighting the high level they have reached.

As for relations with Egypt, President Tebboune said: “Our relations with Egypt go back nearly 70 years. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi is a brother to me. When Algeria came under attack in 1963, the first to rush to our aid was the Egyptian army. When Egypt needed military support, the late Houari Boumediene did not hesitate to provide assistance. We consider ourselves in the same trench despite differences in some views. Anything that affects Egypt affects us, and we reject any aggression against it.”

On the situation in Libya, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed that Algeria always works to preserve Libya, expressing hope for stability in the country and noting that Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt are the parties that best understand their Libyan brothers.

In this regard, he shed light on the role played by the trilateral neighboring countries mechanism (Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia) and the regular meetings of the foreign ministers of these countries on the situation in Libya, stressing the need to “allow Libyans to decide the future of their country and choose those who represent them.” Accordingly, He reiterated the importance of legislative elections in this process, as emphasized by the United Nations.
