Nigerian President Deploys Army Following Deadly Attack

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered military deployment to a central-western region of the country, following a deadly attack that killed at least 162 people, with the terrorist group Boko Haram blamed for the attack, media outlets reported Thursday.

After armed men attacked the village of Woro in Kwara state, Babaomo Ayodeji, Kwara State Secretary of the Red Cross, said that according to recent reports, the death toll now stands at 162, as the search for more bodies continues, describing it as one of the deadliest attacks in the country in recent months.

In response, President Tinubu has ordered the deployment of a battalion to the troubled district of Kaiama, in the east of Kwara state, where Boko Haram terrorists killed defenceless villagers overnight in Woro, in what he described as a “cowardly and beastly attack”, according to the presidency’s statement issued Wednesday evening.

Kwara state is witnessing multifaceted insecurity, facing armed gangs, locally referred to as “bandits”, that loot villages, kidnap, and terrorize citizens, alongside a growing terrorist threat, with active groups in the country’s northwest extending their operations toward the south.
