Arab League Strongly Condemns Zionist Entity’s Recognition of Somaliland Region

The Council of the League of Arab States held an emergency meeting at the level of permanent representatives, on Sunday, in which it strongly condemned the Zionist entity’s recognition of “Somaliland,” reaffirming its full support for the Federal Republic of Somalia against any threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The council, in a statement issued following its emergency meeting of permanent representatives, described the Zionist entity’s recognition of the so-called “Somaliland” as an independent country “an act of hostility against Arab national security that could destabilize international peace and security,” stressing that Northern Somalia is an integral part of the Republic of Somalia.

The statement warned that this recognition is intended to serve “political and security agendas,” including the “facilitation of forced displacement of Palestinians and using Northern Somalia seaports to build military bases.” The council also stressed “Somalia’s legitimate right to defend its territories under Article 51 of the UN Charter and the related provisions of the Charter of the League of Arab States.” It also emphasized the League’s “support to Somalia in any measures it takes to counter this attempted assault within the framework of international legitimacy.”

The meeting was convened at the request of Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League, as part of the joint Arab action to face the Zionist entity’s move, described by the Somalia government as an “outrageous assault” on the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, amid warnings that it could have dangerous repercussions on the stability of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
