A senior Russian military official has been killed in Moscow, prompting the opening of a criminal investigation, Russian authorities said. Lieutenant General Sarvarov, head of the operational training department of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, was found dead under circumstances that are now being examined by investigators.
Russian Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said a criminal case has been formally launched into the killing. She noted that investigators are considering several possible motives and scenarios as part of the inquiry.
According to Petrenko, one of the versions being examined involves the possible organization of the crime by Ukrainian special services. She emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that all versions will be assessed as authorities work to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
