Hydrocarbons: Algeria’s Progress Sets an Example for Africa, Says Energy Body

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) highlighted Algeria’s advances in the hydrocarbons sector, particularly its investment regulatory framework, noting that the country’s progress serves as a model for other African countries with oil and gas resources. Algeria, which is “already one of Africa’s most active oil and gas producers, has gained even greater momentum in 2025,” the AEC said in an article on its website, noting that investor confidence in Algeria’s energy sector is growing, thanks to a more favorable investment climate set up by the current hydrocarbons law.

The article highlighted the agreements signed in recent months between Sonatrach and several international companies, especially under the 2024 call for bids (Algeria Bid Round 2024), launched by the National Agency for the Valorization of Hydrocarbon Resources (ALNAFT).

These include development and partnership agreements signed with Midad Energy (Saudi Arabia) and Sinopec (China), as well as those in “advanced talks” with ExxonMobil and Chevron, according to the same source, which pointed out that “Algeria’s progress provides a timely lesson for oil-rich African countries.” The continental body also emphasized Africa’s energy potential, with “approximately 125 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and around 625 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2025,” representing, it stressed, “jobs, infrastructure and prosperity waiting to be unleashed.”
