7th AU-EU Summit: Preventing Illegal Migration Tops Final Declaration

Participants in the 7th African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Summit in Luanda agreed in the final declaration to work together to prevent illegal migration and human trafficking.

“We commit to fostering cooperation through a comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnership in preventing illegal migration, combating the illegal entry of migrants and human trafficking, strengthening border control capacities, and improving an effective and safe mechanism for timely return, while respecting legal standards and human rights,” said the document.

It also emphasizes the need to address the root causes of illegal migration and forced displacement, including by promoting sustainable development and establishing regional stability.

The commitment to assist those in need of international protection, fleeing violence, conflict, and persecution, was also reaffirmed.

“We recognize that, when properly managed in accordance with national needs, safe, orderly, and legal migration can become an opportunity and a catalyst for economic, social, and human development in both host countries and countries of origin,” said the document.
