Trump Confirms Plans to Meet Kim Jong Un, but Emphasizes Focus on China

US President Donald Trump said he is confident that a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will take place at some point, though no date has been set yet. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route from Japan to South Korea, Trump stated, “At some point I’ll be meeting. The schedule is very tight. We’ll come back and we’ll, at some point in the not too distant future, meet with North Korea.”
Trump reaffirmed his willingness to engage with Pyongyang, noting his desire to continue dialogue with Kim Jong Un. However, he emphasized that his current priority is on relations with China, saying, “I also want to focus on China. I mean, our focus now and tomorrow is on China, and I want to make that the focus.”
Commenting on North Korea’s recent test-launch of a strategic cruise missile in the Yellow Sea, Trump downplayed the event, saying the country has been “launching missiles for decades.” He added that he has maintained “a very good relationship” and “a really good understanding” with the North Korean leader.
