Japan, U.S. Sign Deals On Rare Earths, Nuclear Power

The United States and Japan signed new agreements on rare earths supply and next-generation nuclear power, aiming to reduce dependence on China and strengthen energy cooperation.

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi signed the framework deal at Tokyo’s Akasaka Palace. It covers securing supplies of critical minerals used in vehicles, electronics, and defense equipment.

Both nations pledged to boost investment in rare earth projects within six months, explore joint stockpiling, and coordinate with partners to ensure supply-chain security.

They also agreed to cooperate on AP1000 and small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) involving companies such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Toshiba.

The White House added that the partnership extends to fusion energy and other clean-tech areas as part of broader efforts to enhance energy security and technological competitiveness.
