Algeria Urges Enhanced Cooperation Amid Major Shifts in Global Energy Markets

The Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, speaking on Thursday in Doha, Qatar, urged member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) to strengthen cooperation and coordination to safeguard their shared interests amid the “profound transformations” reshaping global energy markets, according to a statement from the Ministry.

Arkab made these remarks during his speech at the opening of the 27th GECF Ministerial Meeting, held in Doha, Qatar, chaired by Libya’s Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Rajab Abdel Sadiq, who currently chairs the forum.

The meeting was attended by ministers from member countries and the GECF Secretary-General.

In his address, Arkab emphasized that “the Doha meeting convenes at a critical juncture for the global energy sector.” He noted that the GECF “has become a trusted collective voice advocating for natural gas as a clean, safe, and abundant energy source, playing a pivotal role in ensuring energy security and advancing sustainable development.”

The Minister of State reiterated “Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the principles of partnership, dialogue, and solidarity that underpin the Forum,” affirming the country’s “consistent readiness to actively support its mission and strengthen its role as a reliable and influential organization defending the interests of its members on regional and international stages.” Arkab underscored “Algeria’s firm belief that natural gas is not merely a transitional energy source but the energy of the future, contributing to global energy security, sustainable development, and the well-being of peoples.”

Arkab also commended “the significant efforts of the Forum’s Secretariat in fostering dialogue and cooperation among member countries and elevating the role of natural gas in the global energy mix.” The minister highlighted “the importance of stability and security in natural gas markets,” stating that “predictable, balanced, and transparent markets benefit both producers and consumers.” He emphasized that “achieving this goal requires sufficient investment in infrastructure and supply, alongside constructive and sustainable dialogue among all stakeholders.”

Arkab also praised “the leading role of the Gas Research Institute (GRI), affiliated with the Forum and hosted by Algeria, as a scientific and research platform for advancing technical expertise and innovation in the natural gas industry.” He reaffirmed that “Algeria remains committed to supporting the institute’s development into a global reference for applied research aimed at enhancing the efficiency of production, transport, and consumption while minimizing emissions.”
