Poland Detains 55 Suspected of Working for Russian Intelligence

Polish authorities announced Tuesday that 55 people have been detained in recent months on suspicion of carrying out activities for Russian intelligence—an increase from the previously reported eight cases.

Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesperson for the minister overseeing Poland’s special services, said the figure reflects multiple overlapping investigations but did not specify the individual charges. Earlier, Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that eight people were detained in recent days across the country for allegedly preparing acts of sabotage.

Among those arrested is Danylo H., a 21-year-old Ukrainian citizen apprehended near Warsaw on Oct. 16 for suspected espionage in Poland and Romania, in cooperation with Romania’s intelligence service (SRI). Authorities say the detained suspects were involved in activities ranging from railway surveillance and arson attempts to information gathering for Russian operatives.
