The Algerian Desalination Company (ADC), a subsidiary of Sonatrach Group, is working, within the framework of the country’s water security, on the adoption of innovative water desalination solutions, such as mobile container-type stations, particularly in southern provinces with large saline groundwater reserves, the company’s assistant CEO, Mouloud Hachlaf, said on Tuesday.
In a statement to National Radio, Hachlaf explained that ADC is working to “develop several projects, such as mobile containers intended for seawater and groundwater desalination, which can be deployed in different regions of the country,” emphasizing that these containers constitute “practical solutions, particularly in southern provinces such as El-Oued, El-Meghaier and Biskra.” In this regard, he mentioned the first complementary seawater desalination program, which includes five major stations commissioned in early 2025 in El Tarf (Koudiet Draouche), Boumerdes (Cap Djenet), Tipaza (Fouka), Oran (Cap Blanc), and Bejaïa (Tighremt-Toudja), each with a production capacity of 300,000 m³/day, bringing the total number of operational desalination plants nationwide to 19.
He said that these large plants are operating at full capacity, while those of Oran and Bejaïa plants are expected to reach their full production capacity. These five (05) stations produced considerable quantities of drinking water until October: 29.5 million m³ in El Tarf, 37 million m3 in Oran, 11.5 million m3 in Bejaïa, 39 million m3 in Tipaza and 31.7 million m3 in Boumerdès.
Regarding the second complementary national seawater desalination program, the official said it includes six large plants with a capacity of 300,000 m³ per day each, in the provinces of Skikda, Jijel, Tizi Ouzou, Chlef, Mostaganem, and Tlemcen, in line with the directives of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to ensure citizens’ drinking water supply.
