Iran says US president’s invitation to dialogue is contradictory

Iran said on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump’s call for a peace deal with Tehran was inconsistent with Washington’s actions, referring to its strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June.

Tehran views “the US president’s expressed desire for peace and dialogue as contradictory to America’s hostile and criminal behavior toward the Iranian people,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

In June’s 12-day war, the U.S. joined the Zionist forces in striking Iranian nuclear facilities, a move that derailed high-level nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington.

On Monday, Trump said he wanted a peace deal with Iran and that the ball was in Tehran’s court for any agreement to come to pass.

In its statement, Iran dismissed the call.

“How can one claim to seek peace and friendship while simultaneously attacking residential areas and peaceful nuclear facilities, killing over a thousand innocent people, including women and children, in the midst of political negotiations?” the statement added.

This comes as Western countries accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists its nuclear programme is only for civilian purposes.
