China Slams US for Veto Abuse at UN Blocking Action on Gaza Genocide

China has strongly criticized the United States for the repeated abuse of veto power at the UN Security Council, accusing Washington of shielding ‘‘Israel’’ and obstructing global efforts to end the war on Gaza.

“If it were not for the United States’ repeated abuse of the veto, the Security Council’s response to the Gaza crisis would not have been so inadequate,” China’s UN Ambassador Fu Cong told the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. He added that U.S. obstruction has allowed ‘‘Israel’’ to flagrantly violate international law.

Fu condemned Washington’s decision to veto the Sept. 18 draft resolution on Gaza, despite overwhelming calls from the international community for an immediate ceasefire. “Time and again, the Security Council has sought to take actions, only to be forcefully blocked by the United States again and again,” he said, expressing China’s “deep disappointment and regret.”

Since October 2023, when the Zionist entity launched its war on Gaza, U.S. diplomatic cover has helped sustain the assault, which has killed over 66,000 Palestinians — mostly women and children. The bombardment has devastated the enclave, causing famine and rendering it uninhabitable.

Fu stressed the urgency of an immediate and lasting ceasefire, reiterating Beijing’s support for a two-state solution. “The two-state solution remains the only viable path to resolving the Palestinian question. Both Gaza and the West Bank are inseparable parts of Palestinian territory. Any post-war governance and reconstruction arrangements must adhere to the principle of Palestinians governing Palestine and respect the will of the Palestinian people,” he said.
